Some time ago I was able to participate in a workshop of Pinterest and learned many interesting things about the platform and also realized its potential. Pinterest has long been my main source of inspiration. But now I don’t only use the site to search for ideas and inspiration, but also to share my own content. Since the content on Pinterest always has a link to an external website, it is ideal for driving traffic to your own site and that’s also were the potential for your business lies. So let me give you some tips & tricks on how to use the platform effectively.

1. Business Profil anlegen

In order to use Pinterest for your own business, be it a blog or an online shop, the first step is to create a «Pinterest Business Profile». You can do this in your profile settings (more information can be found here). It is also important that you link to your company’s social media profiles and verify your website. You should also provide as much information as possible about your company. Write a short description so that visitors to your profile immediately know what you or your company does.

It is important that you provide all information in your company language so that users do not switch to your site and find another language afterwards.

2. Start to pin content

Once you have set up your business profile, you can start pinning. For this purpose it is useful to set up some pin boards, where you can sort the pins thematically. There are basically two ways to pin:

1 Pins: When people talk about pins, they are talking about their own content. This means that you share content from your website or other websites on your pin boards.

2 Re-pins: You can also re-pin pins from other Pinterest profiles to your boards. This is called re-pinning.

3. Make your website «pinnable»

In order for you and your readers to link the content of your website to Pinterest, you need different tools. You can easily install them on your computer or in your CMS system. Many users have already installed a button in their browser which enables them to post the content of websites on their pin boards. But you can’t assume that all users have this button, so you should give them the possibility to share your content easily. There are ways to do this, such as putting a button on each picture or under a post, where readers can simply click and remember the content on their Pinterest board. You can find out how this can be done through Pinterest here. There are also plugins like the Pinterest PinIt Button Plugin for WordPress, which allows you to integrate these buttons into your CMS system.

4. Picture requirements for pins

The pins you link to Pinterest should always look attractive and above all be informative! You are much more likely to click on a pin that promises you the information you need than on a mere picture. For each blog post I would certainly create a «prepared» pin with an informative text. This post should:

  • be in 2×3 portrait format (1000x1500px)¨
  • show an appealing picture that provides information about the content of the article
  • highlight the added value of your post with an image overlay.

Create a recognizable design and ask yourself what kind of text you would look for at Pinterest. A good tool to create informative pins is Canva. There you can also find pre-designed samples. This is what your refurbished pin could look like:

6. Increase interaction to profile

Of course it is not enough to just set up a profile and pin your website content. In order to generate traffic to your website, you need to drive traffic to your Pinterest profile first. Like most social media platforms, this means being active. Pin and re-pin inspirations daily, maybe 10-15 pins per day at the beginning. The distribution of own and foreign pins is based on an 80:20 rule. 80% of your pins can be foreign content, 20% your own. But you have to be aware of the fact that re-pinning my pins will also increase the reach of other users. So whenever possible try to create your own pins every day.

7. Share inspirations with your clients and team members

I use Pinterest not only to increase traffic on my site, but also to share inspiration with a client and team members. I create pin boards that serve as mood boards for me and share them with the people I want to work with. With the board settings you can easily invite people to the board via their email address and they can also pin to the board themselves. Like this both have the same ideas how the result of the shooting should look like and maybe also which looks should be composed.

I hope this initial information will help you to get your website Pinterest ready and increase the traffic on your website. Let me know if you want to know anything else!
